IPv4 Transfers in 2024: A Statistical Overview

Below are detailed charts and statistics highlighting the IPv4 transfers in 2024. These figures are drawn from data reported by all Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) — ARIN, APNIC, RIPE, LACNIC and AFRINIC. The statistics focus on transfers of unused IP addresses and exclude those resulting from mergers and acquisitions. Additionally, this article includes historical data to offer a perspective on the variations in the market over the years.

In 2024, there were 8393 IPv4 transfers, an increase compared to the 7615 transfers in 2023 and 6263 transfers in 2022.

Month-wise IPv4 transfers

The highest number of transfers occurred in December (1232), followed by March (925) and February (848). The least activity was observed in January, with only (480) transfers.

Regions with the highest number of transfers

As the graph shows, RIPE had the highest number of unused blocks transferred (5768) followed by ARIN (1938), APNIC (1190) and LACNIC (222).

Inter-RIR transfers

RIPE had the highest number of inbound transfers (transfers from other RIRs) at 436, followed by the ARIN (215) and APNIC (50)

APNIC had the most outbound transfers (transfers to other RIRs) at (349), followed by the ARIN (211) and RIPE (160)

Transfers by IP block size

In both 2023 and 2024, /24 blocks were the most transferred IP block size, with a notable increase from 2588 transfers in 2023 to 3184 transfers in 2024. /22 blocks followed as the second most transferred, showing a slight decline from 2379 in 2023 to 2345 in 2024. The trend highlights the continuing dominance of smaller IP block sizes in transfers.

Number of IPv4 transfers annually from 2017 to 2024

From 2017 to 2024, the highest number of transfers occurred in 2024 with a total of 8,393, surpassing the previous peak of 8,333 in 2021. This was followed by 7,615 transfers in 2023 and 6,540 in 2020. On the other end of the spectrum, 2017 had the lowest activity in this eight-year period, with just 4,565 IPv4 transfers.
